ACTIVATE
A. Directions for Output 1
1. Form a group of three members. Design and draw a communication model that demonstrates how you communicate with one of the following: a parent, a stranger or foreigner, a lover, a child, a school administrator, a professor or other student.
2. Your model should contain the elements of the communication process.
3. Cite a possible communication barrier or situation where communication breakdown could occur. Highlight how to overcome those barriers. Illustrate and explain this through your model.
4. Display your model and present it to the class. Be ready to share the insights you gained through your model.
B. Directions for Output 2
1. Join together with two or three students in class. Watch two local television newscasts on a similar current event. The newscasts may be live or taken from a particular website. Provide a copy or the link of the newscasts you watched.
2. Compare and contrast the newscasters’ presentations using a Venn diagram (output 2A). Observe the following signals:
· Physical appearance and posture
· Gestures and body movement
· Facial expressions
· Quality, tone, and pitch of voice
3. Explain how the newscasters’ nonverbal behaviors and signals affect you as the audience.
4. Identify two or three problems in the overall presentations and propose solutions to rectify such.
C. Directions for Output 3
1. With a partner, secure any written message (i.e. letter, e-mail, memorandum, etc.).
2. Examine the item and answer the following questions:
§ What is the purpose of the written message?
§ Who is its intended audience?
§ What is the tone of the message?
§ Is the purpose of the message achieved?
§ How would you react if you were the recipient of the message? Why?
§ What changes should be made if you are given the chance to decide what message form and transmission mode to use? Justify your choices.
3. Organize your answers in item #2 into a coherent paragraph.
D. Directions for Output 4
1. Form a group of five members and think of a situation where communication breakdown could occur in any of the following settings:
§ Office/organization
§ School
§ Mall/market
§ Conference
§ Ball/party
2. Give an overview of the communication situation or context.
3. Act out the situation and demonstrate negotiation of meanings in order to arrive at a shared understanding of the message or topic.
